Healthy Blood
Ancient herbal wisdom teaches the “Doctrine of Signatures,” which recognises that the appearance of plants and vegetables indicates the parts of the body they heal. Beetroots are known for their benefits to blood and circulatory health and are now recognised for their high nitrate content. These nitrates are converted into nitric oxide in the body, which dilates blood vessels and helps lower blood pressure.
A study by Queen Mary’s William Harvey Institute showed that beetroot is as effective as nitrate tablets in reducing blood pressure.
Vessel dilation also improves circulation, enhancing oxygen flow throughout the body, which can lead to increased energy and improved athletic performance.
Beetroots are natural blood purifiers and builders, aiding in the formation of red blood cells and improving overall blood structure. This supports the health of the circulatory system, digestive tract, and large intestine.
They also contain betaine, which works with choline (a B-complex vitamin in beets) to prevent the build-up of homocysteine, a compound linked to artery damage, heart disease, and strokes.
Antioxidant
Beetroots are rich in betalains, a powerful class of antioxidants that neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Betacyanin, the pigment giving beetroot its deep ruby red colour, is a potent antioxidant. Beetroots are considered among the top ten most powerful antioxidant vegetables.
Betalains also help neutralise toxins, making them water-soluble for elimination in urine. About 15% of people experience red urine (beeturia) after consuming beets. While not dangerous, beeturia may indicate an iron deficiency.
Liver Health
The liver is the body’s largest internal organ and essential for detoxification and digestion. Beetroots provide nutrients that support liver cleansing and detoxification.
These include betaine, which helps liver cells eliminate toxins; pectin, a fibre that removes toxins from the body once cleared by the liver; and betalains, which have strong anti-inflammatory properties that aid the detox process.
Brain Boosting
Beetroot’s nitrates also support brain health. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Gerontology found that beetroot consumption improves brain neuroplasticity by increasing oxygenation to the somatomotor cortex—an area often affected early in dementia.
Co-author W. Jack Rejeski stated:
“Nitric oxide is a really powerful molecule. It goes to areas of the body that are hypoxic, or needing oxygen, and the brain is a heavy feeder of oxygen… What we showed in this brief training study of hypertensive older adults was that, compared to exercise alone, adding a beetroot juice supplement to exercise resulted in brain connectivity that closely resembles what you see in younger adults.”
